Even among the madness during the Cultural Revolution, he continued to make an effort to pursue democratic ideas. He xercised his diplomatic skills to open China rather than isolate it from the rest of the world. In turn, he brought China into a period of stable economic vitality, which was welcomed by many nations throughout the world. The Zhou Enlai Museum displays his living quarters and offices in Beijing in their the original size and setup as well as famous paintings and calligraphic works that pay a tribute to him.

Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang, seventy kilometers west of Nanjing, lies on the south bank of the Yangtze River in central Jiangsu Province. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway passes the city, and the Grand Canal and the Yangtze River meet here.

An ancient city with a history going back 2,500 years, Zhenjiang occupies a strategic position, being screened on three sides by the Jinshan, Beigu, and Jiaoshan hills (from west to east). Although the hills are only about a hundred meters high, they appear to rise majestically beside the Yangtze.

Lianyugang

Lianyungang, located at the eastern end of the New Eurasia Continental Landbridge, is one of the first 14 Chinese coastal cities opened to the outside world, and is a rising centre of industry, foreign trade and tourism in eastern China.

This port is located in the center of the coast, linking eastern sea routes with western land routes. Both Japan and the Republic of Korea in the east can be reached economically and conveniently from Liangyungang, which is also part of the world-wide network of sea transport. As well as this, the New Eurasia Continental Landbridge and the railway networks in Western Europe continue by land, connecting Lianyungang with over 40 countries and regions in Europe, South Asia and the Middle East.

At present, the Chinese government has clearly stated its intention to build an economic belt along the New Eurasia Continental landbridge in "the 9th Five-Year Plan of National Economy and Social Development and the Long-range Goal for the Year 2010"; and on "China's 21st Century Agenda", Lianyungang is to be developed into an international seaport linking countries on the Pacific rim with those in Central Asia. In the "National Ocean Development Plan" it is listed as one of three special development zones.

With beautiful mountains and sea scenery, abundant historical sites and a pleasant climate, Lianyungang is one of the country's 49 key tourist cities, and one of the three biggest nature reserves in Jiangsu. The coastal scenery is very special, with mountains side by side with the sea, making the city an ideal summer resort. Huaguo Mountain, from where the Monkey King (main character in the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West) comes, and different kinds of flowers and fruit grow all year round, is located in Liangyungang. The road on top of Huaguo Mountain leads to Yuwan, where there is a succession of water falls over the cliffs (the highest over 40 meters). There are also the quiet Suchen Town; the strange sea of rocks in Donglei; the refreshing Donghai hot springs; the ancient Haizhou City; the primitive totem cave murals 5000 years old; also the country's earliest Buddhist images 200 years older than the Dunhuang murals; and the site from where Xu Fu started his trip east to Japan in the Qin Dynasty. In short, Lianyungang features a variety of attractions: seaside and hotsprings, ancient and mythological sites, strange geological formations and oases of tranquility.
