About Ningbo
Ningbo, located in the middle of China's coastline and the southeast flank
of the Yangtze River Delta, is a beautiful port city with rich cultural heritage
and abundant resources. It is the birthplace of the 'Hemudu Culture' dating back
7,000 years. Since the Tang & Song Dynasties (618-1279), Ningbo has always
been an important foreign trading port in China. Ningbo covers a total area
of 9,365 square kilometer and has a population of 5.38 million.
Early in the Han Dynasty, Xi Kou scenic spot enjoyed high reputation of being a fairyland on the sea. Xue Dou Mountain, standing above a chain of connected mountains and covered with verdant old pine trees and flickering green bamboo, is a famous summer resort of natural beauty. In addition, it is also the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek.
Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 – April 5, 1975) was a Chinese military and political leader who assumed the leadership of the Kuomintang (KMT) after the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1925. He commanded the Northern Expedition to unify China against the warlords and emerged victorious in 1928 as the overall leader of the Republic of China (ROC). Chiang led China in the Second Sino-Japanese War, during which Chiang's stature within China weakened but his international prominence grew. During the Chinese Civil War (1926–1949), Chiang attempted to eradicate the Chinese Communists but ultimately failed, forcing his government to retreat to Taiwan, where he continued serving as the President of the Republic of China and Director-General of the KMT for the remainder of his life.
Chiang Kai-shek's Former Residences at Fenghua consists of the Fenggao House, the Yutai Salt Shop and the Western-style House. The Fenggao House, situated on the Middle Street, Xikou, Fenghua City and facing the stream, was the birthplace of Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Jing-guo. Its architectural space covers an area of 4800 square meter, and its floorage is 1850 square meter. The structure of the house is typical of traditional Chinese style with an antechamber, a back chamber, two wings and four verandas. The high buildings and elegant balconies, the winding verandas, the black columns and red walls, all these keep the house splendid.
Tian Yi Pavilion Library is the earliest and oldest, private and folk library well preserved in China today, and even in Asia. It was built in 1561-1566 by Mr. Fan Qin, a high-ranking official equivalent to today's minister of national defense in the 39th year of Emperor Jia Jing's reign in the Ming Dynasty. Originally, it had collected more than 70,000 volumes of books. After over 400 years of vicissitudes, there still have kept a large collection of about 300,000 ancient books, among which 80,000 are rare only-existing copies, mostly woodcut and hand-written copies of the Song and Ming dynasties. They are rich sources of local chronicles and imperial examinations and are precious materials for the study of history, people, social customs and habits.
